Cold Comfort

“Marvel not, my brethren, if the World hate you”

1 John 3:13

In a comment on Bonald’s latest post I said the distillation of Christianity is probably 1 John 3:13 and not John 3:16.  Read Bonald on what it means when “the force” is with you and against you.  His post inspired me to Christianize the twenty-third Psalm, next to John 3:16 the most comforting verses in the Bible.

The Devil is my jailer; I shall want.

He maketh me to lie down in cold dungeons: he leadeth me beside the pen cesspool.

He starveth my soul: he leadeth me through the wings of wickedness for his name’s sake.

Yea, I walk round the yard of the prison of death, yea I fear sore evil: for he is on me; his rod and his staff they pummel me.

He prepareth a scaffold before me to the hoots and halloos of mine enemies: he anointeth my head with ordur; my tin cup runneth dry.

Surely trouble and evil shall follow me all the days of my life: that I may at last fly to the house of the Lord forever.
